Today is my 40th birthday

Time really flies. I have just crossed the 40th age barrier when the clock struck 12am today (actually I  delayed this by a few hours since I am in Europe right now). In Singapore, you are awarded the title "elder" if you reach 40 years old as you are entitled to join Eldershield, a governmental insurance scheme.

The average lifespan for Singapore male resident as of 2015 stands at 80.4 years. Given my health condition, I believe I can outlive this average figure. But having said that, there could be a number of unhealthy years in the last part of my life. So plus and minus, I still probably have 40 years left to enjoy what I want to do. Right now, I am still working and don't see myself retiring any time soon, so I will just need to balance work and life accordingly.

Relationships are very important to me. I appreciate all the love and concerns given to me by my family, relatives and friends. I will continue to treasure and further build on these relationships.

On personal level, I want to experience as much as possible before the last day of my life. It's weird to talk about death on my birthday. But this is something that has always been lingering on my mind.

People who know me will know that I like to eat and travel. Yes, these are what I like.

I have what I call a wide operating envelope when it comes to food. As long as it is fit for consumption and it is good, I EAT! Of course, I do have certain preference, but I don't reject just because I don't like. I only reject if it is not good. I think a lot of people are confusing these two - don't like does not mean not good. I want to try all the best food in the world, but there are so many of them. Therefore, I need to be systematic and I need to prioritise. Whenever possible, I will pick from the following

  • Michelin starred restaurants
  • World's Best restaurants, sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Pana
  • Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Awards

I have chosen the above few as I want the selection panel to be as wide range as possible. I totally recognize that many of these restaurants are in the fine dining category. That's the reason why I still need to work.

Next, I want to be at different parts of the globe to experience the atmosphere which you cannot get from the photos. It does not take me long for me to realise that theme parks and shopping trips are not my cup of tea. Since few years back, I have been focusing on World Heritage Sites. I must tell you many of these are really facinating! These sites are inscribed for a reason (and many times, many reasons). 20-30 new sites are being added to this list every year, so technically it becomes more and more difficult to complete the whole list. Actually it does not matter if I can ever finishing visiting all, the more important thing is that I can understand this world more to make me a better person.

Lastly, to chase the above two passion, I need to be as fit and healthy as possible. I have picked up running a year back, and I feel that I am in better shape now than most parts of my life. Running has really changed me - I pay more attention on my lifestyle and diet nowadays.  I am also interested to see what my ultimate running potential is, since I have never been serious in running all my life. I had competed in a number of local races and this really helps me to push myself to improve. To make it even more fun, I want to run overseas, since after a while, the race routes are largely the same. I will probably choose from IAAF label road races. These are the more reputable ones which meet certain organizing criteria.

That's all for now. I will start to post my journey from this point onwards. Stay tuned.
